Does the consular office in london accept fax copy of the "letter of invitation" when applying for a visa?

i am trying to apply for a visa to visit algeria. i am a uk citizen, i have all my doents ready for this visa application, just needed to know if i need the origi copy of my letter of invitation from algeria to apply for my visa? At the moment i have a fax copy from Algeria that has been authorised by the president of the town. i cant get in touch with the office to ask them and it would be a waste of 6 hours driving down to london to find out that i need the original doent. Please can anyone advise..
